How to Determine If You Have Dry Skin or Dehydrated Skin?
Skin Care

More often, we confuse dry and dehydrated skin thinking that they are the same, when in fact they aren’t. Those who encounter dry skin or dehydrated skin experience different symptoms, and treatments to these conditions differ as well.

Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin – What is the Difference?

Dry skin is skin type rather than a condition that pertains to the lack of natural oils or sebum on the skin. This means that the sebaceous glands don’t provide adequate natural oils. Dry skin may be flaky, itchy and can crack.

Skin type may change over time due to age and season. The common skin types include combination, dry, oily and normal. People who have dry skin may be associated with conditions like dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. There are many factors that add or cause skin dryness which includes frequent exposure to dry weather, underlying medical conditions, reaction to chemicals or simply from a hot climate.

On the other hand, dehydrated skin pertains to the lack of water or moisture from the skin.

The characteristics of dehydrated skin may be similar to dry skin such that the skin may appear itchy and dull, however, the complexion may also appear uneven and fine lines and wrinkles may appear more obvious. Dark circles around the under eye area and dark shadows around the nose area may also mean that the skin is dehydrated.

Determine whether you have Dry Skin or Dehydrated Skin.

You can actually do a quick test at home to determine whether you have dry or dehydrated skin. If you pinch your cheeks and the skin doesn’t bounce back or appear supple as it should be, rather you notice that wrinkles are more apparent then chances are that our skin is dehydrated. To be accurate, a quick visit to a trusted dermatologist will also be good.

Treatment for Dry Skin

If you have extremely dry skin, it is always a good idea to seek professional advice from your dermatologist or aesthetician. There are some lifestyle suggestions that may be able to help with dry skin which you may like to try and incorporate into your routine.

Here are some recommendations:

1. Always moisturise. Try to keep a moisturiser inside your bag to smooth and hydrate your skin anytime you need it.

2. Use soap or body wash with moisturising properties.

3. Don’t spend too much time in the shower.

4. Use a soft towel after bathing and pat yourself dry instead of rubbing your skin.

5. Keep your skin hydrated by drinking lots of water.

6. Shower with slightly cold water instead of hot water which can be drying.

7. Make sure to check the ingredients of the skin care products you’re using. Ensure that they contain deeply moisturising properties to keep your skin nourished throughout the day.
