The Horrifying Truth About Fake Tans…How You Can Get a Naturally Bronzed Look this Summer
Skin Care

According to the Cancer Council, approximately two out of three Aussies will be diagnosed with skin cancer  by the age of 70. Over 750,000 Australians are treated for non-melanoma skin cancers every year. Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that in 2016, 13,280 new melanoma cases will be diagnosed and 1,770 people will lose their lives.

With greater awareness about the dangers of a suntan, more Australians are looking at fake tans as a safer option to get a bronzed look without exposure to UV rays.

The Dangers of Commercial Fake Tanning Products

fake tanningFake tanning products can give a tanned look to the skin without exposure to ultraviolet rays. These are commonly available as creams, lotions and sprays which can be applied directly to the skin.

The primary ingredient in commercial and organic fake tanning products is DHA (dihydroxyacetone). DHA is a colour additive which reacts with dead skin cells on the surface to darken the skin and give the appearance of a tan. The colour generally wears off in a few days.

In commercial fake tans, mainly synthetic DHA is used, typically between 3-5%.  The added chemicals weaken the skin’s surface and allow the product to be absorbed in the blood stream.  While this results in the tan to develop faster, the chemicals cause toxicity in your body and can lead to adverse health problems in the long run.

Solarium Beds…More UVA Than the Summer Sun

With the exception of Northern Territory, commercial use of solariums in Australia has been banned and attracts a fine of $44,000.

This had led to the sprouting of a black market where solarium owners illegally hire out their tanning beds from private rooms.

Solarium beds have been found to emit UV radiation at dangerously high levels. In fact it’s as high as six times what you absorb from the summer sun. There has been scientific evidence that solarium beds significantly increases the risk of melanoma, one of the most dangerous skin cancers.

Before the ban was enforced, it was estimated 281 melanoma cases and 43 melanoma related deaths were caused due to solarium use.  This cost the health system approximately $3 million.

Why Organic Fake Tans are the Safest Option

While natural fake tans also contain DHA, these are derived from organic ingredients such as sugar beets. Since there are no added chemicals,  the DHA reacts to amino acids only  on the top layers of skin, essentially dead skin.

If you’re looking for a tanning product, look for one which is certified organic. Organic fake tans which aren’t certified may contain nasty chemicals and just a few natural ingredients so that they can pass off as organic products.

Here are some of the guidelines you can follow to ensure you’ve bought a safe and natural organic fake tan:

    •     Ingredients should be derived from plants or minerals
    •     No chemical sprays should have been used in growing the plants from which  ingredients have been extracted
    •     The product should not contain synthetic or petroleum based ingredients
    •     None of the ingredients used should be genetically modified
    •     The product should not have been genetically modified
    •      Ensure the product has not been tested on animals
