A household name in Australia and New Zealand, Manuka honey has gained popularity all over the world in homes and hospitals. The distinctly sweet and aromatic flavour makes it the perfect sweetener. The antibacterial properties of Manuka honey is also the reason why it’s the preferred choice of hospitals, family health care centres, beauty and skincare centres, veterinary practices, diabetic clinics and other burns units all over the world.
The antibacterial properties of Manuka have been tested using a range of methods and there has found to be intensified antimicrobial activity often known as Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA).
Research undertaken in 2006 to find the cause of this activity, has revealed the antimicrobial activity is on account of Methylglyoxal (MGO), a naturally occurring chemical. Tests have also shown Manuka honey can contain in excess of 70 times the level found in other honeys.
