The weather has finally changed, and you may have felt that at times it can be rather chilly. Most of us think that winter is the best time to get cozy and indulge in comfort foods that help keep our bodies warm, but, if we’re not careful we could end up not moving as much as we should to stay fit and healthy.

Eat healthy to stay healthy.

Stack your fridge and kitchen cabinets with fresh fruits and vegetables. Now is the best time to indulge in foods that offer nutrition benefits instead of junk and processed foods. Good healthy foods keep you and your family warm, happy and healthy. Remember that flu, colds, and cough thrive during this season but if you eat healthily, there’s a better chance for you not to fall ill.

Go for leafy greens like cabbage, brussels sprouts or spinach, hearty vegetables like potatoes, turnips, sweet potatoes, artichokes or pumpkin, and stir-fry vegetables like garlic, onion, carrots, broccoli or cauliflower. Don’t forget fresh fruits rich in Vitamin C like oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit help boost the immune function.

Don’t succumb to hibernation, exercise and stay active.

When the temperature goes down, we have this sudden urge to succumb to slumber.  Try to focus and remind yourself that this is actually the best time to stay active and exercise.  Staying active also helps boost your immune system so you are less likely to get sick with frequent winter viral infections like sore throats, flu, cough or colds.

Master your heater.

Adding more warmth and heat in the room can be done by simply closing unused doors, opening the curtains when the sun is up and bright, placing a door draft stopper so cold air wouldn’t enter underneath, or add rugs and mats to cold floors.  Even when you don’t turn the heater on, you can get yourself warm and cozy with a blanket, a sweater or a coat, a beanie, socks or drink up something hot.  Some lovely herbal teas will warm you up and hydrate you at the same time!

So, snuggle up, stay warm, comfortable and healthy. Remember winter won’t last forever and soon enough spring will be right on our doorstep!
