Is Eco Tan (fake tan) Safe During Pregnancy? image by Love Thyself Australia

If you’ve always longed for that sun kissed look but have been concerned about the damaging effects of harsh Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or indoor tanning, you may have considered fake tan products as an alternative.

One of the questions which many women ask is whether organic fake tan is safe during pregnancy.

To answer this question, you first need to understand why organic fake tan products are different from other tanning products you can buy from the supermarket.

How Fake Tan Products WorkHow fake tanning works image by Love Thyself Australia

The reason why fake tan products are gaining popularity is because they give the body an even tan without exposure to harmful UV rays. These are most commonly available as creams, lotions and sprays.

Most of the fake tan products you can buy contain an active ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This is what gives the skin a fake tan. It works by reacting with the dead cells on the surface of your skin to temporarily give it a darker look, simulating a tan. The colouring normally fades away in a few days.

The difference between fake tan products containing DHA and some other commercially available bronzers is that the latter can be washed away with water, which isn’t the case with DHA. This is one of the reasons for the popularity of DHA based fake tans.

Safety Concern of Fake Tans During Pregnancy

The main concern with using fake tan products during pregnancy is the presence of DHA.
Although there isn’t any conclusive evidence, it is believed DHA has the potential to alter genes of organisms and cells. Inhalation of DHA can cause it to enter the lungs. Inhalation of DHA causes it to enter the bloodstream, which not only carries the risk of cancer to the mother but can have an adverse reaction on the fetus.

DHA can also cause the skin’s surface to weaken which causes the harmful chemical to be absorbed faster in the bloodstream.

If you’re looking to give yourself a tan during pregnancy, then make sure to check the ingredients very carefully, so you can avoid choosing a fake tan product which contains chemicals.
So, if products containing chemicals aren’t safe to give you a fake tan, what are your best options?
Fortunately there are organic fake tans available in the market or on online stores, which are a safer option.

Why Eco Tan (Fake Tan) is a Safer Option During Pregnancy

In organic fake tans, the DHA is derived from ingredients such as sugar beets which are natural. These only react with the amino acids present in the top layers of dead skin and do not penetrate to the deeper skin tissues.

If you’re looking for an organic fake tan, here are some guidelines you can follow:

  • Ingredients should be from a mineral or plant source
  • Should not contain ingredients which are synthetic or petroleum based
  • Ingredients should not be genetically modified
  • Product should not have been tested on animals

Some fake tans have a perfume which pregnant women find overwhelming.
Fortunately there are products like Eco Tan which can give an even tan without any smell. It also contains rose geranium oil, aloe vera, chamomile and avocado oil which nourish the skin.

They also free from parabens which can cause harm to the fetus.

If you’re pregnant and are considering a fake tan, make sure you choose a product which is 100% organic to keep you and your unborn child safe from harm.

Pregnancy hormones makes us look pale and the easiest way to add a healthy glow and colour is by using eco tan. This product is safe for pregnant women but you still need to consult your OB before getting one.
